Movement And A Distinct Name

The Tribe's history describes Shawnee movement westward in response to colonial encroachment and United States removal of remaining Ohio Valley Shawnees into Kansas by 1832. It traces the absentee distinction to groups absent from the 1854 Kansas reservation treaty signing, after moving toward Indian Territory or Texas. The account identifies Absentee-Shawnee, (Loyal) Shawnee and Eastern Shawnee as distinct governments of Shawnee people. Shared history does not make those governments interchangeable.

Institutions And Cultural Responsibility

The Government page records organization under the Oklahoma Indian Welfare Act of 1936 and constitutional ratification on December 5, 1938. It separates those institutional dates from its account of self-government predating the United States Constitution. The Historic Preservation Department records a 2002 application to assume preservation responsibilities previously held by the state, followed by Tribal Historic Preservation Office status in 2004. These accounts connect governing structures with care for places and heritage. They do not certify today's procedures or define the beginning of Shawnee people.
