Context and resources
A Community Name With A Longer History
The Tribe's history connects Passaunkack with the area of today's Upper Mattaponi community. It describes Upper Mattaponi participation in the 1677 Treaty of Middle Plantation under Cockacoeske, then an Adamstown community recorded in 1885 and the adoption of the Upper Mattaponi Tribe name in 1921. This is the Tribe's historical account, not a present land-boundary or treaty-rights determination.

Sharon Indian School And Community Continuity
The school history dates construction to 1919, closure to 1965 and King William County's return of the building to the Tribe to 1987. The About page distinguishes an earlier school from a 1950s replacement. The Tribe's pages describe the school as a gathering place and the Foundation as a steward of its history and educational work. These are the publisher's accounts; they do not establish today's access, hours, staffing or program results.
